Students of Motomachi Elementary School performed an A-bomb related play at “Paper crane assembly”

Motomachi Elementary School, located in Naka Ward, Hiroshima, holds “Paper crane assembly” every summer, with an aim that children can pass down peace and war memories.
In 2010, students of the school performed a play with theme of an orphan’s facility for A-bomb orphans and orphans returned home from other countries such as the Philippines. The facility, Hiroshima Shinsei Gakuen is now situated in Higashihiroshima City, but it used to be in Motomachi, Naka Ward, near the school.
The play depicts the late Yorito Kamikuri who founded the facility was facing and communicating with children. 14 students from 4th to 6th grade performed the play in front of all other students at school. Even now, remains of orphans that no one has come to pick up are reserved in the facility.
School principal, Takashi Ninomiya, 50, says “It looked a heart-stirring experience for children to see Mr. Uekuri’s life. In order to realize a peaceful society, we need to grasp the importance of life as our own issue.”
Students of the school kept on communicating with a cartoonist known for “Barefoot Gen”, a famous A-bomb comic book series, Keiji Nakazawa, who passed away last December. At a graduation ceremony, held on March 19, students introduced words, “Be strong like wheat”[It means, wheat grows up straight and strong no matter how many times it’s stepped on] they learned from Mr. Nakazawa. In coming June, they are going to have an event commemorating 40th anniversary of start of the series of “Barefoot Gen”. (Kantaro Matsuo)
