Okada wants denuclearization of North East Asia to be policy of Democratic Party

by Kohei Okata, Staff Writer

A meeting of the Parliamentarians for Disarmament Promotion of the Democratic Party was held at the Diet on May 21. Katsuya Okada, secretary general of the party and head of its disarmament group, advocated that a North East Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone treaty that the group has been calling for be adopted as party policy.

Mr. Okada pointed out that the Japanese government has failed to present any concrete measures for nuclear disarmament while the momentum in this direction is gathering speed around the world. He stated, “It is important that we propose concrete plans which can take the lead in efforts for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. It is high time that a North East Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone treaty be steadily promoted by the Parliamentarians for Disarmament Promotion of the Democratic Party, and that a treaty be considered as a policy for the next cabinet.”

Hideo Hiraoka, secretary general of the Parliamentarians for Disarmament Promotion of the Democratic Party, who had explained about the treaty at an international conference in New York, also expressed his opinion that the treaty should be included in the party’s manifesto.
