On November 4, Walid Abdelnasser, Egyptian Ambassador to Japan, met with Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba at Hiroshima City Hall. Ambassador Abdelnasser conveyed the stance of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who is enthusiastically seeking to establish a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, while Mayor Akiba called for closer ties with Egypt in pursuit of nuclear abolition.

According to Ambassador Abdelnasser, the Egyptian government is calling on cities in that nation to join Mayors for Peace, for which Mayor Akiba serves as president. Ambassador Abdelnasser also expressed his support for a bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games that is now being considered by the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
