by Daisuke Suzuki, Staff Writer

On January 28, the Hiroshima International Cultural Foundation, chaired by Nobuko Yamamoto, selected three people for the 12th International Exchange Encouragement Prizes, which are awarded to those steadily engaged in international exchange activities.

Odile Ruault, 75, a Frenchwoman, has visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park annually for the past 14 years in time for the August 6 anniversary of the atomic bombing to clean up around the Atomic Bomb Memorial Mound as a volunteer. Last year, Ms. Ruault cleaned the area with her pen pal, a junior high school student who lives in Asaminami Ward.

Mioi Nakayama, 32, a native of Higashi Ward, helped set up a school for street children in Bangalore, India in 2005. Along with the children, she has created a play on the theme of the atomic bombing and is performing the play at schools and other venues.

Kinue Oshima, 35, a Noh performer in the city of Fukuyama, took on the challenge of staging a new Noh play in English in four European cities, including London and Paris, last December. She has been conveying the fascination of Noh beyond the differences of language and nation.

The recipients of the prizes were selected from articles and programs that were produced by the Chugoku Shimbun and the RCC Broadcasting Co., Ltd. last year. The award ceremony will be held in February in the Chugoku Shimbun Building in downtown Hiroshima. The Hiroshima International Cultural Foundation will present the recipients with certificates of merit and prize money of 100,000 yen per person.
