On April 12, Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno, who was visiting Hiroshima, commented on the city of Hiroshima's effort to bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics. "Hiroshima has a very strong impact on the process," he said. "It has more appeal than any of the other candidate cities." The city of Rome is also planning to bid for the 2020 Olympics.

Mr. Alemanno answered questions from the media after visiting Peace Memorial Museum. "If both cities are chosen as official candidates, I would like to compete fairly as good rivals," he added.

On the same day, the mayors of Rome and Hiroshima released a joint statement calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons by 2020 and world peace. The statement also indicated that "no matter where the Games are held, both cities will strive to achieve our shared goal of organizing a magnificent Olympics."
