The 2010 Session of the Management and Conservation of World Heritage Sites, organized by the Hiroshima Office of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), opened at the building of the Hiroshima Chamber of Commerce and Industry on April 19. This is the 7th such seminar. In attendance on the first day were 39 people, including government officials and researchers, from 27 countries.

Following the opening ceremony, Duncan Marshall from the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) explained the current status of World Heritage sites around the world and the importance of the conservation effort.

Maha Al-Obaidy, 50, a senior engineer at the Iraqi State Board of Antiques and Heritages, commented, "We have some heritage sites that were nearly destroyed due to the chaotic conditions in our country. Our people don't understand their value. I'm eager to bring back the knowledge and information I acquire here to my country."

The session will last for five days until April 23. There will also be a public session open to local residents at 6:30 pm on April 21 at the Hiroshima Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Those interested in attending should contact the UNITAR Hiroshima Office at 082-511-2424.
