The Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA) and the Hiroshima International Cultural Foundation, chaired by Nobuko Yamamoto, announced their choice to design this year's "Hiroshima Appeals Poster" on April 20. Keisuke Nagatomo, 71, a Tokyo resident and a graphic designer and visiting professor at Tokyo Zokei University, has been selected as the 13th creator of the poster, which is intended as an appeal for peace.

Mr. Nagatomo is the founder of K2, a design office, along with Seitaro Kuroda, a well-known artist, and has been active in the art world as art director of magazines and in other endeavors. He has created various social artworks, including in the areas of peace and the environment.

JAGDA explained that it chose Mr. Nagatomo because he is "an outstanding designer who experienced the conditions of World War II." Born in Osaka, Mr. Nagatomo was evacuated to the eastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture during the war. "I still clearly remember the day the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima," he said.

The creation of the "Hiroshima Appeals Poster" began in 1983. Mr. Nagatomo's poster will be completed in July, and 3,000 copies will be distributed to educational institutions and peace organizations.
