by Sakiko Masuda, Staff Writer

Mayors for Peace has been chosen as a recipient of the Gernika Awards for Peace and Reconciliation, sponsored by the city of Gernika-Lumo, a Spanish town known for the severe destruction caused by heavy aerial bombing, and other organizations. Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba, who is the president of Mayors for Peace, shared the news on April 23.

Reportedly, the vigorous effort by Mayors for Peace to achieve the abolition of nuclear weapons by 2020 has been highly appreciated because "it contributed to raising international awareness." The award ceremony will be held in Gernika-Lumo on April 25. The mayor of Granollers, another Spanish city and one of the vice president cities of Mayors for Peace, will attend the ceremony.

Gernika-Lumo was devastated in 1937 by indiscriminate air raids during the Spanish Civil War. The air raids became well-known because Picasso condemned the attack through a work entitled "Guernica."

The Gernika Awards for Peace and Reconciliation were established in 2005 to recognize individuals and organizations who have contributed to building peace and promoting reconciliation.
