Japanese foreign minister will not attend NPT Review Conference

by Kohei Okata, Staff Writer

Tetsuro Fukuyama, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Japan, revealed on April 26 that he will most likely attend the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference scheduled for May in New York as the chief delegate of the Japanese government. The government will make an official decision sometime soon. Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada will not take part in the meeting.

At a scheduled briefing, Mr. Fukuyama clearly stated that the prime minister will not attend the review conference. He listed several reasons including the prime minster's attendance at the Nuclear Security Summit held in Washington, D.C. this month. The foreign minister will probably be traveling to African countries at the time.

It is expected that Mr. Fukuyama will speak on such occasions as the general debate by government representatives scheduled at the beginning part of the conference to call for support for "A New Package of Practical Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Measures" jointly proposed by the Australian and Japanese governments. The United States has announced that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will attend the NPT Review Conference.
