A-bomb exhibition to be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil in August

The Paulista Medical Association in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, is planning to hold an A-bomb exhibition from August 2 to 31 in Sao Paulo. The association will appeal for the necessity of eliminating nuclear weapons by displaying photo posters and other materials loaned from Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, thanks to the cooperation of the Hiroshima Prefectural Medical Association, a sister organization of the Paulista Medical Association.

The A-bomb exhibition will be held to commemorate the second anniversary of the sister affiliation of the two medical associations. According to the organizers, the Brazil Medical Hall in downtown Sao Paulo will serve as the venue and 30 posters which depict the horrific state of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the aftermath of the bombings will be displayed. The Hiroshima Prefectural Medical Association, responding to the idea for the exhibition from the Paulista Medical Association, worked out an arrangement with Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum whereby the museum materials can be borrowed for their Brazilian counterpart.

A-bomb survivors (hibakusha) residing in Brazil will share their accounts of the bombings. The plan also calls for visitors to the exhibition to make 1,000 paper cranes that can be delivered to the city of Hiroshima.

The Paulista Medical Association is comprised of 33,000 medical doctors in the state of Sao Paulo. The Paulista Medical Association and the Hiroshima Prefectural Medical Association established their ties in June 2008, as the Hiroshima Prefectural Medical Association has continued to conduct medical examinations for A-bomb survivors in the state roughly every two years since 1985.

Milton Massato Hida, a doctor residing in Brazil and one of the organizers of the exhibition, said, "As the ceremonies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki held every August are broadcast on TV, the citizens of Brazil show a keen interest in the issue. But only a small number of people really understand the horror of nuclear weapons. We would like to help further the momentum for eliminating nuclear weapons by holding this A-bomb exhibition."
