Prime Minister Kan to convey wish of the A-bombed nation for abolition

by Noritaka Araki, Staff Writer

On August 3, Prime Minister Naoto Kan announced to reporters at the prime minister's residence that he will express Japan's commitment to the goal of nuclear abolition in his address to be delivered on August 6 in Hiroshima.

Referring to this address, Prime Minister Kan said he will appeal to the world that the tragedies experienced by the A-bombed nation of Japan should never be suffered by any other people or nation. He continued by saying that he intends to convey Japan's commitment to a nuclear-weapon-free world.

With regard to the request that the Japanese government abandon the U.S. nuclear umbrella, which will be made in the Peace Declaration read by Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba, the prime minister avoided comment, replying only that he would listen closely to the declaration at the Peace Memorial Ceremony.
