On August 26, the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) held a meeting of its board of directors prior to the organization's World Congress being held in Basel, Switzerland and the decision was made to hold its next World Congress in 2012 in Hiroshima. This decision will become official at its International Council meeting on August 29.

The 2012 World Congress will be the second such gathering in Hiroshima. The first World Congress was held in Hiroshima in 1989.

According to the Japanese Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (JPPNW), Makoto Matsumura, director of JPPNW and executive director of the Hiroshima Prefectural Medical Association, explained to the other physicians at the board meeting the significance of appealing for nuclear abolition from Hiroshima. The fourteen board members offered their unanimous support for JPPNW's bid. Earlier, JPPNW had submitted documents concerning its bid to the IPPNW headquarters in the U.S. state of Massachusetts.

Shizuteru Usui, president of JPPNW and president of the Hiroshima Prefectural Medical Association said with satisfaction: "We would like to make the next World Congress an opportunity for not only doctors but also young people from Hiroshima and around the world to gather together and appeal for peace.” The JPPNW is planning to hold the conference for three days during the period of November 12 to 18.

IPPNW was established in 1980 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. Nearly 200,000 doctors and nurses in 60 countries are members of IPPNW. The IPPNW World Congress has been held every two years since the year 2000. 2012 will mark the 20th World Congress.
