Elementary school students promote World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates

by Yumi Kanazaki, Staff Writer

On November 7, students of Motomachi Elementary School marched from their school to Peace Memorial Park to promote “The 2010 World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates,” scheduled from November 12 to 14 in the city of Hiroshima, as well as related events organized by citizens.

Recently, the students created posters promoting the summit with Seitaro Kuroda, a resident of Kitakyushu and a well-known artist. They were aware of the fact that Mr. Kuroda will hold a “live painting” performance in the park on November 11, the day prior to the opening of the summit, and they came up with the idea of the march to help promote the summit, too.

Nearly 30 people joined the march, including elementary school student, junior high school students who are graduates of Motomachi Elementary School, and local residents. The elementary school students walked to the park to publicize the summit, displaying Mr. Kuroda’s posters and distributing flyers. The junior high school students followed, pushing a cart that was adorned with more posters. Airi Fujiwara, 12, a sixth grader, said, “I was glad that I could help promote the summit and Mr. Kuroda.”

Citizens will organize a concert and a rally in Peace Memorial Park on November 11 and 12. On November 14, the closing event of the summit will also be held in the park.
