On November 13, Roberto Baggio, 43, the retired professional soccer player from Italy who is visiting Japan to attend the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, toured Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

At the Pond of Peace, which surrounds the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims, Mr. Baggio studied the plaque which provides an explanation in Italian, and prayed in front of the Cenotaph.

After visiting the A-bomb Dome, Mr. Baggio toured Peace Memorial Museum. He looked closely at the displays, including belongings of A-bomb victims, while listening to explanations from staff members of the museum and mulling the horrific conditions of the bombing.

Mr. Baggio impressed soccer fans throughout the world with his elegant play on the field and has been called “a national treasure” in Italy. Since his retirement, he has been active as a Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Goodwill Ambassador, among other charitable activities. For such efforts, he will be presented with the “Peace Summit Award 2010” in Peace Memorial Park on November 14, the final day of the summit.
