by Yumi Kanazaki, Staff Writer

Russia’s Federation Council (Upper House) has passed the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) ratification bill. In response to the ratification, Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba made a comment on January 26, saying, “I welcome the news that Russia has ratified the new START Treaty, which serves as an important impetus for realizing a world without nuclear weapons. I hope both the United States and Russia will work hard to reduce their nuclear arsenals even more quickly than the established time period.”
