Dr. Kenji Kamiya, 60, director of Hiroshima University’s Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine based in Minami Ward, Hiroshima, was installed as Fukushima Prefecture’s radiation health risk management advisor on April 1. Dr. Kamiya will give advice mainly on children’s health management in the prefecture where there is growing concern about the effect of radiation following the accident at the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant.

Dr. Kamiya attended a meeting of the prefecture’s task force for disaster countermeasures held at a public facility in the city of Fukushima on March 31. He expressed his determination, saying, “I would like to use the results of Hiroshima University’s radiation researches to dispel fears and promote health of the residents of Fukushima Prefecture.”

Students and parents in Fukushima Prefecture are increasingly concerned about the influence of radiation. To alleviate anxiety, a study meeting for teachers will be held this month to begin with. Fukushima prefectural government has high hopes that Dr. Kamiya will help spread accurate knowledge of radiation.

Hiroshima University’s medical support team specially trained for emergency radiation exposure has been helping the prefecture with advice on conducting radiation dose tests and establishing how to transport patients in case of exposure to radiation.
