Mayors for Peace to adopt system of regional groups, with 14 leader cities

by Kohei Okata, Staff Writer

On September 24, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui, president of Mayors for Peace, presented a policy in which the network of 5,736 member cities will be organized into a new system of 14 regional groups. The system is scheduled to be adopted in April of 2015. Fourteen of the current executive cities will serve as leader cities of the regional groups.

Mr. Matsui announced this plan at a meeting of the city council, held on September 24. By area, Europe will consist of eight groups, the largest number of groups among all parts of the world. Asia will have two groups, one in Japan and the other in the Philippines. And the United States, Africa, Central America, and the Middle East will each make up one group.

Among the leader cities will be Hiroshima, Hannover (Germany), and Akron (U.S.), which now serve as executive cities of Mayors for Peace. Hiroshima has been seeking to create regional groups within the organization to address the different languages and geographical conditions of member cities in those areas.

Mr. Matsui stated, “We will make requests of member cities in South America and Oceania, where no executive cities exist, to serve as leader cities. In the future, we would like to have 30 or so regional groups.”
