Tokyo-based NPO launches website to convey A-bomb experiences to future generations

by Junpei Fujimura, Staff Writer

On October 21, a Tokyo-based NPO, “No More Hibakusha,” which seeks to convey the memories of atomic bomb survivors to future generations, launched a web portal to help transmit these A-bomb experiences. The group is seeking to build bridges and exchanges between survivors who give testimonies of their experiences and individuals and organizations who are engaged in conveying such experiences.

Individual survivors and survivors’ organizations, as well as those who are willing to transmit the A-bomb experiences, register at the portal with information that includes the location of their activities, the desired time, and contact data. Based on this information, the NPO introduces appropriate partners. Individuals and organizations that are registered can also search for suitable partners on their own.

As of October 21, the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations is registered on the side of survivors, and three organizations, in Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture, are registered on the side of transmitting the A-bomb experiences.

Kazuhisa Ito, secretary general of the NPO, said, “Even if there are survivors in our neighborhood, willing to tell their experiences, and those who want to hear their testimonies and pass them on, they may not know about one another. This portal can serve as a bridge for these people.” The NPO welcomes small organizations to register at the portal, too.

“No More Hibakusha” was established in December 2011 in response to a call made by Kenzaburo Oe, a Nobel Prize-winning novelist, and others. Among other activities, the NPO aims to establish a center to archive A-bomb survivors’ testimonies and records of various actions as well as transmit them to the public. Initially, the group hoped to open the portal in June, but preparations delayed the launch.
