by Aya Kano, Staff Writer

On October 24, an international symposium was held at Funairi High School in Hiroshima. The entire student body listened to student representatives exchange ideas with consuls general from South Korea, Russia, and Vietnam on such issues as the history shared by Japan and these countries, territorial issues, and the export of nuclear energy technology.

The three guests were: Shin Hyung-Keun, the Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Hiroshima; Naiyl Latypov, the Consul General of the Russian Federation in Osaka; and Nguyen Sau, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Consulate General of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in Osaka. On behalf of the 1,075 students, 10 students asked questions on issues facing Japan and these nations.

On Japan-Russia relations, Mr. Latypov said that exchange between young people will lay the foundation for a cooperative relationship, in which Japanese technology and Russian resources can be utilized. Asked for his opinion on exporting nuclear energy technology from Japan to Vietnam, Mr. Sau said that this issue is often discussed in Vietnam. He added that electricity is indispensable to economic development but that all necessary steps must be taken to ensure safety.

Mr. Shin touched on Japan-Korea relations, which have been buffeted by the history between these two nations. He asked that the students learn about Korean society, which has become a part of the Hiroshima community as well, to help bring about a genuine reconciliation.

The event was organized by "Planting Seeds of Hope," an Osaka-based citizens' group. A third-year student, Taisei Morita, 18, said, “Through direct dialogue with the people who represent these nations, I felt the warmth of interpersonal connections.”
