Former U.N. ambassador from Japan is new head of Institute for Peace Science at Hiroshima University

On January 22, Hiroshima University announced that Tsuneo Nishida, 66, the former Japanese ambassador to the United Nations, is expected to assume the post of director of the school’s Institute for Peace Science on April 1, 2014. This marks the first time that someone from outside the university is filling this role. The university seeks to strengthen its efforts to communicate “a spirit for peace” by introducing Mr. Nishida as head of the institute.
Mr. Nishida, originally from Tokyo, joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan in 1970. After serving as deputy-director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as the Japanese ambassador to Canada, he was the Japanese ambassador to the United Nations from June 2010 to September 2013. Mr. Nishida, along with Toshimasa Asahara, the president of Hiroshima University, will hold a press conference on January 28.
The Institute for Peace Science, located in downtown Hiroshima, was launched in 1975 as a university-wide facility for the gathering of data and research into peace science. Masaki Sakakoshi, the vice president of Hiroshima University, has also been serving as director of the institute.
