On February 13, Hiroshima University’s Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine (RIRBM), located in Minami Ward, Hiroshima, concluded an agreement on academic and educational exchange with the Republican Research Centre for Radiation Medicine and Human Ecology in Belarus.

The agreement will connect RIRBM with the expertise gained by the Belarusian institute through its treatment of victims exposed to radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear accident. RIRBM will make use of this expertise in its support for the health care of A-bomb survivors and those exposed to radiation from the nuclear accident at the Fukushima No. 1 (Daiichi) nuclear power plant. In particular, RIRBM will seek advice on the relationship between radiation exposure and thyroid cancer while promoting joint research and fostering a new generation of researchers.

At the signing ceremony held at Koujin Hall on the Kasumi Campus of Hiroshima University, Toshiya Inaba, director of RIRBM, addressed the audience: “We are eager for the Belarusian institute to share their valuable findings with us.” He signed the written agreement with Alexander Rozhko, director for the Republican Research Centre of Radiation Medicine and Human Ecology in Belarus.
