Tsuguya Inoue, 66, a graphic designer and resident of Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, has been chosen to create the 2014 version of the “Hiroshima Appeals” poster, which appeals for peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons at home and abroad.

The announcement came on February 14 from the three sponsoring organizations: the Japan Graphic Designers Association, located in Tokyo; the Hiroshima International Cultural Foundation, located in Naka Ward, Hiroshima; and the Hiroshima Peace Creation Fund, also located in Naka Ward, Hiroshima.

Mr. Inoue is originally from Miyazaki Prefecture. He has created graphic designs for beverage makers and fashion brands, and also designed a collection of photographs of the well-known actress Rie Miyazawa.

The design of the poster will be announced in late June. A total of 1,500 posters, measuring 103 centimeters in height and 72.9 centimeters in width, will be printed. They will be sold at such places as Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and art galleries for 1,080 yen. The “Hiroshima Appeals” poster will also be displayed around the city.

This year’s poster will be the 17th version. Masahiro Nojima, a member of the Japan Graphic Designers Association, held a press conference at Hiroshima City Hall and introduced Mr. Inoue as “an artist with creative flair whose work is ahead of the times.” Mr. Inoue offered remarks in a message from Tokyo, saying that it is difficult to convey the atomic bombing, but he will do his very best.
