Hiroshima governor to share “Hiroshima for Global Peace” plan at NPT gathering in New York

At the prefectural assembly’s general inquiry session on March 3, Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki announced his decision to attend the third session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, which will be held at United Nations headquarters in New York from April to May. To coincide with the PrepCom, he will hold a panel discussion in New York to call for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Mr. Yuzaki will be the first governor of Hiroshima Prefecture to attend the PrepCom. He said, “I would like to contribute to efforts to advance the abolition of nuclear weapons.”

At the panel discussion, Governor Yuzaki will explain the “Hiroshima for Global Peace” plan, promoted by the prefectural government. “I plan to stress the inhumanity of nuclear weapons and what is being done in each nation for nuclear disarmament,” he said with conviction. “I would like to help strengthen Hiroshima’s voice in the international community and deliver our message more widely to the public.” He added, “As governor of Hiroshima Prefecture, which experienced the atomic bombing, I will do what I can, keeping in mind the A-bomb survivors and other people in Hiroshima who earnestly wish for peace.”

The third session of the PrepCom will take place from April 28 to May 9 to discuss the agenda for the 2015 NPT Review Conference and other subjects. Mr. Yuzaki is planning to observe the session, too. Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui will also visit the United States around the same time.
