Doris Salcedo, winner of the Hiroshima Art Prize, visits Japan

Making her first visit to the city of Hiroshima, Doris Salcedo, 55, a Colombian artist and winner of the Hiroshima Art Prize, met with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui on July 11 at City Hall. The Hiroshima Art Prize is an honor given to artists who have contributed to peace in the field of contemporary art. Ms. Salcedo is visiting Japan to attend the award ceremony on July 18 at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art (Hiroshima MOCA) in Minami Ward. Ms. Salcedo said she is pleased that her work, which expresses solidarity with victims of violence and discrimination, has been recognized in this way.
Ms. Salcedo is internationally known for her sculptures and installations, where everyday furniture and other objects are used to convey memories and mourning which involve victims of violence.
Mr. Matsui explained that Ms. Salcedo is being awarded the prize because her work shares Hiroshima’s spirit and wish for peace. Ms. Salcedo said, “I would also like to learn from Hiroshima, which has overcome the suffering from the atomic bombing.”
Hiroshima MOCA will hold the first exhibition of her work in Japan from July 19 to October 13.
The Hiroshima Art Prize was established by the City of Hiroshima in 1989 and is awarded once every three years. Past recipients have included Yoko Ono.
