by Yota Baba, Staff Writer

On August 5, the memorial ceremony for Korean A-bomb victims was held in front of the Monument in Memory of the Korean Victims of the A-bomb in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. About 250 people, including family members of the dead, were in attendance.

Shim Sung Eui, leader of the Hiroshima Headquarters of the Korean Residents Union in Japan, organizer of the ceremony, dedicated the register containing the names of 2,689 Korean victims, with the addition of seven whose deaths were confirmed during the past year, to the monument. Those present then offered silent prayers. In his address, Mr. Shim referred to the Japanese government’s approval of the right to collective self-defense and North Korea’s nuclear development program and pledged that his organization will make efforts so that the A-bomb tragedy is never repeated.

Seo jang-eun, consul general of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hiroshima, attended the ceremony, too, and said that he hopes the pain caused by the sufferings of the atomic bombing and ethnic discrimination will be healed. Toward this end, the consul general expressed his desire to see the ceiling for the subsidies given to A-bomb survivors living outside of Japan for their medical expenses be eliminated and enshrined into law.

The ceremony marked its 45th year and its 16th year since the monument was moved inside the park.
