by Michiko Tanaka, Staff Writer

On August 19, Fuko Hamasaki, 15, a first-year student at Notre Dame Seishin Senior High School and a resident of Nishi Ward, Hiroshima, took part in a press conference at Hiroshima City Hall. Fuko reported on her activities during a visit to Germany as a High School Student Peace Ambassador, including her participation in peace events. She said, “I was able to share the idea that thinking for ourselves and taking action can advance the abolition of nuclear weapons.”

After being selected as a High School Student Peace Ambassador by citizens’ groups in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Fuko traveled to Germany from August 4 to 9. On August 6, she spoke about the A-bomb experiences of her grandparents before about 100 participants at a peace event organized by the Japanese Embassy in Berlin, the capital of Germany. She also attended a memorial ceremony for A-bomb victims held in Hannover, a sister city of Hiroshima, and made an appeal for peace.

During her stay in Germany, Fuko spent time with local high school students and was interviewed by local TV stations. “I was able to convey Hiroshima’s message of peace,” she said. “I would like to continue pursuing peace activities as a fourth-generation A-bomb survivor.”
