Ms. Katayama was sent to Geneva from August 17 to 22 with 19 others who were chosen to make up the 17th group of High School Student Peace Ambassadors. She explained to the mayor about their activities in Geneva, which included making speeches and gathering signatures of support for nuclear abolition. She said, “I would like to help send a stronger message of peace from the eastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture.”

The High School Peace Ambassadors have been dispatched to the United Nations every year since 1998 by citizens’ groups in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Ms. Katayama and other students will serve as peace ambassadors until August 11 of next year.
