Foreign Minister of Nepal visits Hiroshima, exchanges views on peace, disasters with Hiroshima mayor

Mahendra Bahadur Pandey, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Nepal, met with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui at Hiroshima City Hall on October 6. They exchanged views on the damage caused by the landslides which struck the city of Hiroshima in August as well as on peace issues.

Mr. Pandey said that Hiroshima is a city which has recovered through the humanity and creativity of its people. He also expressed hope that Hiroshima will continue to send out a message of peace to the world. Mr. Matsui spoke about the civil war in Nepal and said, “Hiroshima has overcome difficulties and built peace,” showing his cooperative attitude toward the country.

Mr. Pandey said that more than 150 people were killed in landslides caused by torrential rains in Nepal in August. Mourning for the victims of the Hiroshima landslide disaster which occurred at around the same time, he said that much can be learned through cooperation between Nepal and Hiroshima.

Mr. Pandey is visiting Japan as a guest of the Foreign Ministry of Japan. He met with Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki at the Hiroshima Prefectural Office on the same day. He also laid flowers at the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims and toured Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.
