Peace concert by Japanese, Chinese, and South Korean musicians to be held in Hiroshima on October 24

The “Hiroshima Peace Concert, Melody of Hope” will take place at Aster Plaza in downtown Hiroshima, starting at 6:30 p.m. on October 24. Ten young musicians from Japan, China, and South Korea will perform with hopes for nuclear abolition and peace.

The program will consist of 15 classical pieces, including a trio with Ryo Kojima from Higashi Ward, Hiroshima as a violinist, a baritone solo by a Chinese graduate student, and a cello solo by a Korean high school student.

On behalf of the musicians, Yuya Nishimoto, 12, a sixth grader at Rakurakuen Elementary School, spoke at a press conference at Hiroshima City Hall on October 6. Yuya, a prize winner at an international piano competition in Asia, said, “Pieces were chosen on the theme of war and peace. We hope to move people with our best performances.”

The first such concert was held in New York in 2010, when the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty Review Conference was in session there. That concert was organized by Yasuko Mitsui, a harpsichord player from Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, and others. A similar event was held in Hiroshima in April 2013, and this year’s concert will be the second in the city. It is being organized by an executive committee which consists of local cultural figures. Advance tickets are 3,000 yen for adults and 2,000 yen for high school students and children. For further information, please call 090-1688-6091.
