A lecture on the theme of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi (No. 1) nuclear power plant was held in Hiroshima on March 8. At the gathering held at the Memorial Cathedral for World Peace, Hiroaki Koide, an assistant professor at the Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute, located in Osaka Prefecture, said, “We must seriously consider what to do about nuclear power plants and radiation, which are creating damage around the world.” About 450 people were in attendance.

Almost four years have passed since the nuclear accident in Fukushima Prefecture. Mr. Koide said, “The Fukushima accident has spewed hundreds of times more radioactive substances than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, and this still continues today.” He criticized the national government for trying to put the accident out of people’s minds. “None of the people who caused the damage has been held accountable, and they are trying to evade responsibility. Moreover, the government is trying to restart nuclear reactors and export them. It is something that no one in his right mind would do,” he said.

He also pointed out that operations at nuclear power plants and efforts to develop nuclear weapons are causing problems of radiation exposure around the world. He stressed that nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons must be eliminated from the earth.

The lecture was organized by the executive committee of the 2015 World Nuclear Victim’s Forum, which will open in November in downtown Hiroshima, as the forum’s preceding event.
