Junior writers from Hiroshima report on events in New York in connection with NPT Review Conference

by Rie Nii, Staff Writer

NEW YORK--Two junior writers from the Chugoku Shimbun, who gather information and write articles on peace-related issues, have traveled to New York to cover the NPT Review Conference. On April 26, they began reporting on the conference and related events.

The pair went to a park in the heart of the city for a ceremony prior to a demonstration in order to cover the crowd who gathered there to support the successful outcome of the Review Conference. Shiori Niitani, 16, a second-year high school student, took notes on the speeches made by various representatives, including Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui who called for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of a peaceful world. Nozomi Mizoue, 15, a first-year high school student, took photos of the event.

They also gathered information on the march of atomic bomb survivors and others who walked about three kilometers from the park to a square near United Nations headquarters. Ms. Niitani said, “Some of the participants were singing and dancing as they marched in the procession. They looked happy and positive.” Ms. Mizoue said she was surprised, and explained, “Some people came out of the shops along the street and others joined in the singing. The people of New York City made the march even livelier.”

This is the first time that the Chugoku Shimbun has dispatched junior writers to New York to help cover the NPT Review Conference. The two junior writers will pursue their work until May 1 and present the results of their activities at a youth forum organized by Mayors for Peace.
