On June 13, Arata Kono, 17, a third-year student at Hiroshima Prefectural High School reported on his participation in a recent study tour to Europe to learn about the Holocaust. The tour took place in March and was sponsored by the Hiroshima Peace Creation Fund. Mr. Kono shared what he learned and felt from this experience.

Mr. Kono’s presentation was one of the events at his school’s cultural festival. About 30 people, including students and parents, listened to him speak. He showed photos of the gas chamber on the grounds of the former Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, and provided explanation. He said, “People didn’t know who would be a victimizer and who would be a victim. The Holocaust revealed the danger that is inherent in human beings.”

Masahiro Iwano, 14, a third-year student at Hiroshima Prefectural Junior High School, said, “The presentation made me think that I have to convey the facts of the war, like the Holocaust and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, to the younger generation.” A total of eight students including Mr. Kono, a junior writer for the Chugoku Shimbun, and university students took part in the study tour.
