Hiroshima mayor to visit Brazil from October 22 and appeal for efforts to advance peace

On October 15, the City of Hiroshima announced that Mayor Kazumi Matsui will visit Brazil from October 22 to 27. Mr. Matsui will attend a ceremony of the Brazil and Hiroshima Culture Center (formerly called the Brazil Hiroshima Kenjin Kai) to commemorate the 60th anniversary of its founding in Sao Paulo. In addition, Mr. Matsui will visit Santos, one of the leader cities of Mayors for Peace, for which he serves as president, and appeal for efforts to advance peace in the world.

At the ceremony to take place on October 25, Mr. Matsui will attend along with Hidehiko Yuzaki, the governor of Hiroshima Prefecture, and Masanori Nagata, the chairperson of the Hiroshima City Council. Mr. Matsui will deliver a speech of congratulations at the ceremony and is also expected to take part in the opening ceremony of the “Poster Exhibition on Atomic Bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” which the Brazil and Hiroshima Culture Center will hold for two weeks at a museum in Sao Paulo starting on October 24.

On October 24, Mr. Matsui will visit Santos, which is located about 75 kilometers south of Sao Paulo. He will meet with the mayor, Paulo Alexandre Barbosa, and join an event for citizens to be held at a hall in the city center, where he will make his appeal for united efforts to promote nuclear disarmament.
