by Masanori Wada, Staff Writer

On November 1, Lee Joon-gyu, South Korea’s ambassador to Japan, spoke to students from Japan and South Korea at Hiroshima Shudo University, located in Asaminami Ward. He shared his hopes for the students, saying, “Interactions between students from Japan and South Korea could make a significant contribution to building a friendly relationship between our two nations.”

About 250 people, including South Korean researchers, were in attendance. Regarding relations between Japan and South Korea, which have recently cooled over differing views of history, Mr. Lee said firmly, “We must expand our relationship in the areas where we can pursue coexistence and co-prosperity based on mutual trust and understanding.” He gave, as examples, responding to North Korea, which carried out its fifth nuclear test in September, and cooperating on energy needs.

Mr. Lee’s speech was organized by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hiroshima, located in Minami Ward. The event was held in connection with a seminar at Hiroshima Shudo University to establish a forum on Hiroshima and South Korea that will bring together researchers from the Chugoku region. Prior to the ambassador’s talk, the researchers and students met to exchange ideas on their research themes, and Mr. Lee addressed this meeting, too. The forum is expected to be established next year, with the aim of promoting academic exchanges between universities in the Chugoku region, which includes Hiroshima Prefecture, and South Korea.
