Hiroshima University to join hands with French NPO in nuclear power plant accident research

by Kenichiro Nozaki, Staff Writer

On February 9, Hiroshima University concluded a partnership agreement with the Nuclear Protection Evaluation Center (CEPN), an NPO based in Paris, France which pursues radiation protection research. The two organizations will work together in such areas as conducting surveys on radiation disasters, including accidents at nuclear power plants, and cultivating human resources capable of dealing with post-disaster reconstruction. A joint research base for their activities will be established at CEPN.

Mitsuo Ochi, the president of Hiroshima University, and Thierry Schneider, the director of CEPN, signed the agreement in a ceremony held in Tokyo. The two institutions have agreed to work together in research activities related to the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 (Daiichi) nuclear power plant and the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in Ukraine, as well as an internship program for students. Five people attended the signing ceremony.

This effort is linked to a graduate program at Hiroshima University, which is seeking to establish an academic discipline in radiation disaster restoration based on its research achievements involving the damaging consequences of the atomic bombing and medical treatment for radiation victims. After the ceremony, Dr. Ochi said to the media, “We will be able to contribute to the world in the field of radiation protection, since both organizations have produced good results in research on nuclear power plant accidents and other issues.”

In relation to this program, Hiroshima University concluded a comprehensive partnership agreement with the Tokyo-based National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) on February 8. They will collaborate in research projects on disaster prevention mainly in the field of radiation disaster. GRIPS, which holds leverage over the national government’s policy decisions, is entering into its first partnership agreement with a Japanese university.
