Hiroshima Peace Media Center marks 10th anniversary, plans to strengthen its efforts

by Makoto Iwasaki, Executive Director of the Hiroshima Peace Media Center

The Hiroshima Peace Media Center, the website maintained in five languages by the Chugoku Shimbun, marked its 10th anniversary on January 1, 2018. Through the newspaper and this website, we have been conveying to the world the disastrous consequences that were caused by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the efforts to hand down the A-bomb experiences of the aging survivors, and the movement for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Though the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted last year at the United Nations, the road ahead toward nuclear abolition remains difficult. Hiroshima’s primary aim, to communicate what happened when a nuclear weapon was used to attack the city, must be expanded in further ways. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum serves as the main hub for these efforts. Though the museum holds more than 20,000 artifacts linked to the atomic bombing, some of which are donated items, they have not been made use of fully or publicized to the extent possible.

This year, in collaboration with the museum, the Peace Media Center website will begin introducing some of the artifacts that have not previously received much attention, focusing on the message that each artifact tells. In order to more effectively convey information as a news outlet based in Hiroshima, we plan to revamp our website and strengthen its features so that users, including those of younger generations, can learn more about nuclear issues and peace issues and reflect more deeply on these important concerns.
