The 2019 edition of “Hiroshima Insight,” a newspaper published by the Chugoku Shimbun for the peace studies of junior high and high school students, is now ready for distribution. Taizo Sato, the editor-in-chief at the Chugoku Shimbun, presented the newspaper to Rie Hirakawa, the superintendent of the Hiroshima Prefectural Board of Education, at the office of the education board on June 19. This is the seventh edition of the newspaper, whose layout and contents are renewed each year.

The newspaper is printed in color and tabloid form and consists of 24 pages. The new edition contains a feature article on the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, whose full-scale renovations were completed this past April, and a manga story which communicates the importance of passing on the A-bomb experience to younger people. Also included is an article about High School Student Peace Ambassadors, teenagers who make efforts to appeal to the world to abolish nuclear weapons, as well as other teen activists.

Among the eight accounts of A-bomb survivors included in the newspaper, two have been translated into English so that students can use them when they convey messages of Hiroshima to other countries.

Mr. Sato said, “I hope the newspaper will be used on many different occasions including peace studies and in morning homeroom meetings.” Ms. Hirakawa responded, “This newspaper is easy for students to understand. This will help Hiroshima’s children learn more deeply. Students who visit Hiroshima on school trips can utilize it when they learn about Hiroshima before visiting the city.”

Partly supported by the Hiroshima International Cultural Foundation, the Chugoku Shimbun has issued 220,000 copies of “Hiroshima Insight” for junior high and high school students. Some of the contents are different for the junior high and high school levels. They will be distributed for free to junior high schools and high schools in Hiroshima Prefecture and junior high schools in 11 municipalities in the eastern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture through the newspaper’s sales outlets.
