“Hiroshima Appeals” poster for 2019 is revealed

(by Keiichi Nagayama, Staff Writer)

This year’s “Hiroshima Appeals” poster, which calls for the elimination of nuclear weapons and conveys the preciousness of peace, was revealed to the public by the Hiroshima branch of the Japan Graphic Designers Association, the Hiroshima International Cultural Foundation, and the Hiroshima Peace Creation Fund on July 18. The poster marking the 74th year since the atomic bombing was created by Katsuhiko Shibuya, 62, a graphic designer and second-generation A-bomb survivor living in Meguro, Tokyo. The motif of the design is a child held in its mother’s arms, intended to convey the importance of handing down peace.

Titled “Hope,” the poster depicts a mother and her child and a swallow and its egg using numerous blue lines which represent the flash of the atomic bomb. The back shows the image in reverse with the child’s face colored red. At a press conference held at Hiroshima City Hall, Mr. Shibuya said, “Through the child, I expressed energy for the future. At the same time, I sought to convey free-floating anxieties felt by the second- and third-generation survivors.”

Receiving the poster, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui expressed his gratitude. He said, “It is important to impart the value of peace through design. I would like this poster to appeal for peace to the entire world.”

This is the 22nd version of the “Hiroshima Appeals” poster. Two thousand copies of this B1-sized (103 by 72.8 centimeters) poster will be printed and sold at such places as the Peace Memorial Museum in central Hiroshima for 1,080 yen each. The poster will also be displayed at public facilities of the city. There is a plan to hold the first touring exhibition of all 22 “Hiroshima Appeals” posters outside Japan in October.
