On the 8th, a memorial ceremony and peace gathering were held in Fukushima City to remember Fukushima Air Raid Day 55 years ago, when 80% of the city burned and 354 people perished.

The Ceremony Remembering the Victims of the Atomic Bombings and the Fukuyama Air Raid sponsored by the Fukuyama Federation for the campaign against A- and H-bombs (President: Fukuyama Mayor Akira Miyoshi) began at 5:30 pm in Chuo Park in Kasumi-cho.

Roughly 250 members of the bereaved families, city officials, and others attended the ceremony. Representatives of various organizations offered flowers to the Mother and 2 Children Monument, which memorializes the city residents that perished in the bombing. Mayor Miyoshi, in his memorial address, said, "On the eve of the 21st century, we vow to move towards enduring peace among the peoples of the world." The students of Nishifukazu Elementary and Jonan Junior High School presented strings of folded paper cranes, and many came forward to offer chrysanthemums.

Sponsored by the city and various organizations, the 2000 Gathering for Peace held at Reed and Rose Hall in Matsuhama-cho attracted roughly 1,300 persons. The performances at this musical celebration expressed the sanctity of peace.
