Memorial service for 2,592 Korean victims of the atomic bombing '02/8/6

The Memorial Service for Korean Victims of the Atomic Bombing was held on August 5th in front of the Monument in Memory of the Korean Victims of the A-bomb, located in Peace Memorial Park, Naka-ku, Hiroshima City. The roughly 150 bereaved family members and related persons at the event sponsored by the Hiroshima Prefecture Branch of the Korean Residents' Union in Japan (Mindan) prayed for the peaceful repose of the victims' souls.

The names of four victims whose deaths were confirmed over the past year were consecrated to the register of the deceased housed in the monument. The register now contains a total of 2,592 names. Chairman Pak delivered an address. Regarding the of lack of coverage for A-bomb survivors residing on the Korean peninsula under the Atomic Bomb Survivors Support Law, he said, "It is most regrettable that even today survivors living on the Korean peninsula are not treated like survivors in Japan. We must solve this problem while they are still alive to benefit from it."

Clad in traditional Korean dress, women from the Hiroshima Prefecture Branch sang a song expressing sorrow for the victims. Participants offered flowers in front of the monument. A 76-year-old participant from Saeki-ku, said that he had lost several survivor friends over the last year and went on, "My legs are getting so bad, I'm not sure I will be able to make it to the service next year. I wish Japan and South Korea would work together to help the survivors."
