Nagasaki asks communities to protest India N-tests

NAGASAKI, May 19 Kyodo - Nagasaki is asking Japanese municipalities that have declared themselves nuclear-free zones to send protest letters to India and Pakistan for conducting or reportedly preparing to conduct nuclear tests, municipal officials said Tuesday.

The officials said the city of Nagasaki mailed letters asking 2,276 local governments to express opposition to India's detonation of five nuclear devices last week and Pakistan's reported preparations to hold its own test in the near future.

Nagasaki Mayor Itcho Ito has been an advocate of the mobilization of the nuclear-free zones' network beyond a simple declaration opposing nuclear weapons into concrete action.
