Clinton imposes sanctions against India

BERLIN, May 13 Kyodo - U.S. President Bill Clinton said Wednesday he has imposed sanctions against India in retaliation for its multiple underground nuclear tests.

Clinton, speaking at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, called on India not to carry out further tests.

Clinton also said the U.S. expects neighboring Pakistan to remain calm despite India's latest nuclear testing.

The U.S. sanctions will come under the 1994 nonproliferation law that stipulates strict sanctions against those nations that receive or explode nuclear devices.

The measures include a call for an end to financing by the World Bank and other international financing institutions.

Clinton, arriving in Berlin on Wednesday, is expected to give a speech on post-Cold War European security following his meeting with Kohl.
