Ramos condemns India's nuclear tests

MANILA, May 17 Kyodo - Philippine President Fidel Ramos on Sunday condemned India's nuclear tests last week and urged Pakistan and other neighbors to show the ''highest degree'' of restraint.

Ramos said in a statement he is deeply disturbed over India's defiance of the strong support of the international community for nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament.

'''I am also concerned at the effects of these tests on the peace and stability in South Asia and at their serious implications for global security,'' he said.

''I join the call of the international community in its appeal for the neighbors of India to exercise the highest degree of restraint in order to maintain peace and stability in the region,'' he said.

The president strongly urged India to refrain from carrying out any further tests and not to proceed with its nuclear testing program.
