Chronology of events surrounding Pakistan's nuclear tests

ISLAMABAD,May 28 Kyodo - The following is a chronology of major events leading up to Pakistan's nuclear tests conducted Thursday.

Aug. 1947 -- Pakistan, India gain independence from Britain.

Oct. 1947 -- First India-Pakistan war breaks out in disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.

Sept. 1965 -- Second India-Pakistan war.

Dec. 1971-- Third India-Pakistan war.

May 1974 -- India conducts first nuclear test.

Sept. 1986 -- Pakistan signs nuclear cooperation treaty with China.

May 1989 -- India test-fires medium-range missile.

Oct. 1990 -- U.S. halts military and economic aid over suspicion that Pakistan is developing nuclear arms.

May 1995 -- Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty extended indefinitely.

July 1996 -- All declared nuclear powers begin moratorium on nuclear testing after China's 45th nuclear blast.

Sept. 1996 -- Countries sign Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty at U.N. General Assembly.

July 1997 -- Pakistan test-fires medium-range missile.

July 1997 -- U.S. conducts subcritical nuclear tests for first time since signing of CTBT.

April 6, 1998 - Pakistan test-fires medium-range missile ''HATF-5 (Ghauri).''

May 11, 1998 -- India conducts three nuclear tests for first time in 24 years.

May 13, 1998 -- India conducts two nuclear tests, declares end to planned program of nuclear tests.

May 15, 199 -- Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee declares India a nuclear state. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott visits Pakistan, urges not to conduct nuclear tests.

May 18, 1998 -- Japanese emissary Seiichiro Noboru meets Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Gohar Ayub Khan.

May 27, 1998 -- Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto urges Pakistan to exercise restraint in telephone conversation with Sharif.

May 28, 1998-- Pakistan conducts nuclear tests.
