U.N. disarmament confab opens in Kyoto
KYOTO, July 27 Kyodo - A four-day U.N. conference on disarmament began Tuesday in Kyoto, with about 60 private-sector experts from 24 countries participating.
The main theme of this year's conference is ''disarmament strategy and security concerns in the next 10 years,'' the Foreign Ministry said.
The participants will discuss security situations and the prospects for disarmament in the Asia-Pacific region, especially regarding the Korean Peninsula.
Japan has hosted all 10 past sessions of the annual conference since it was established in 1989 under an initiative made by then Japanese Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita during a 1988 special U.N. General Assembly session on disarmament.
