外国でも平和を話し合うために

戦後の広島で重要な役割を果たした外国人の一人にノーマン・カズンズさんがいます（前回課題のＱ２を見てください）。

ジャーナリストとして、そして慈善家としての彼の仕事は広島ではよく知られています。しかし、命を脅かされるような病気と彼が長い間闘っていたことはあまり知られていません。

広島市西区の畠さんが書いたように、カズンズさんは喜びや笑いを含む感情が、痛みや病気に対する体の免疫を強めるために力を持っていると信じていました。心臓の病気に苦しみ、生きるチャンスがほとんどないと知りながらも、カズンズさんはコメディー映画を見ることで笑うことを治療に盛り込んでいました。病気や治療法についての本もいくつか書き、医師が考えたよりも長く生きました。実際、彼は初めて病気を診断されてから３６年間生きたのです。

米国イリノイ州出身。ニューヨークの大学と、サンフランシスコの大学院で演劇を勉強。大学院生のときに「ピースコール」というボランティアとして、ヨーロッパのチェコで英語の先生をした。広島市安佐北区在住。
