外国でも平和を話し合うために

米国イリノイ州出身。ニューヨークの大学と、サンフランシスコの大学院で演劇を勉強。大学院生のときに「ピースコール」というボランティアとして、ヨーロッパのチェコで英語の先生をした。広島市東区在住。

前回のテーマ「ＩＴ（情報技術）」（クロスワードパズルの答えはＥＭＡＩＬ）について、思ったほど応募がなくて残念でした。皆さん年末で忙しかったのでしょう。

Kantaさんは、被爆者の動画が見られる、インターネットのサイト「被爆者の声」について書いてくれました。英語のページもあるので、世界中の友達にも知らせてあげるといいと思います。

IT (INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY)（情報技術）

As today's feature article shows, IT can be very useful for interacting with others. Using the Internet, we can now share information and exchange views with people almost anywhere. In terms of handing down the A-bomb experience, IT has become an important new tool. Websites can offer the written accounts of A-bomb survivors and videos can convey their stories. At the same time, because the amount of information on the Internet has grown so large, creating an audience for a website has become a big challenge. It isn't enough to produce a website and simply hope that people will find it. For those seeking to spread the A-bomb experience online, making efforts to attract an audience is important, too.

きょうの特集記事が示すように、ＩＴは他者との交流にとても役立ちます。インターネットを使えば、ほぼどこにいる人とでも、すぐに情報を共有したり意見交換したりできます。被爆体験を継承する上で、ＩＴは重要な新しい手だてとなっています。ウェブサイトは、被爆者の手記を紹介することもできるし、映像で被爆者の体験を伝えることもできます。その一方で、インターネット上の情報量が多くなりすぎているため、ウェブサイトを見てもらうことが大きな課題になっています。ウェブサイトをつくり、ただ人々に見つけてもらうことを期待するだけでは十分ではありません。被爆体験をインターネット上で広げるには、人々を引きつける努力をすることも重要です。

Ｍｓ.MURATA :	I agree, sometimes the Internet can be a big distraction. It's very easy to waste time looking at things that aren't really important to you. This is one reason I don't have a Facebook account yet! Anyway, thanks for taking time to write another good essay. The first sentence, though, would be more natural like this: "When I entered this university, I got a new computer." Happy Holidays to you!
Ｍｓ.Kanta :	Thank you for sharing that website link. I had visited the website once before, then paid another visit after I read your essay. I hope more people can become aware of it. Your essay was well-written, too. At the beginning, though, this sentence would sound more natural if it was rewritten just a bit: "There is a website where visitors can hear the voices of about 100 hibakusha." Happy Holidays!

さて今回の課題は、特集にちなんで「お好み焼き」です。これ以上に「おいしい」テーマはないですね。正月休みにぜひペンを取り、パズルを解いてください。そして地元名物のお好み焼きについてエッセーを書いてくださいね。

ＯＫＯＮＯＭＩＹＡＫＩ

Ten years ago, when I was a teacher at Hiroshima International School, I often went to a small okonomiyaki shop with a group of other American teachers. Although the staff of the okonomiyaki shop couldn't speak much English, and our Japanese wasn't so good, we became friends and enjoyed a lot of fun times together at that restaurant. One Sunday morning we even went there to cook an American-style breakfast for them! It's a small thing, perhaps, but a group of Japanese and a group of Americans - who would have been enemies years ago - found friendship ... and it all started with okonomiyaki. The other teachers have since left Japan, and I no longer go there as often as I once did, but it remains a happy memory.
