Shirin Ebadi

Human rights activist from Iran. Awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 2003. Born in 1947. Earned a doctorate in law at Tehran University. Became the nation’s first female judge in 1975, sitting on the Tehran City Court. Amid the Islamic regime, has advocated dialogue and non-violence. As a lawyer, has contested oppression, promoted democracy, and championed the rights of women and children.
