■ Gates of Peace

There are ten gates standing on the green belt on the south side of Peace Boulevard. Each one is 9 meters high, 2.6 meters wide, and 1.6 meters long and made of steel frames covered with reinforced glass. The word “Peace” in 49 languages is written on the surface of the gates. At night the gates are lit from the inside and the text glows white.

The gates were created by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte and graphic designer Clara Halter, who have donated “peace” walls to various parts of the world. The completion ceremony was held on July 30, 2005, and the gates were donated to the City of Hiroshima. The French creators proposed raising the gates in Hiroshima to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing. The cost of approximately 300 million yen was covered by donations from French and Japanese companies.

The ten gates reportedly represent the nine hells in The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri, an Italian poet, plus the hell caused by the atomic bombing.
