The Pond of Peace, later expanded, surrounds the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims. (Photographed in 1957)
The Pond of Peace was completed on August 3, 1957 by the Junior Chamber International Japan to commemorate its fifth convention held in Hiroshima. The pond was originally a two-meter wide moat surrounding the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims on three sides. When the Flame of Peace was constructed in 1964, the pond was expanded behind the cenotaph to its current dimensions, 17 meters wide and 70 meters long, by the Flame of Peace Construction Committee.
